Our skilled and experienced team of engineers pride themselves on being able to fix many of the basic things that can go wrong with your air conditioner within that first hour.

To DIY or not to DIY?

Should you attempt AC repairs yourself? Keep in mind that since these systems require a significant amount of electricity to run, attempting repairs on your own can jeopardize your safety, not to mention probably void the warranty by doing the HVAC repairs yourself.

However, when your central air system isn’t working as it should, there are a few simple steps to do by yourself to troubleshoot the problem.

Unit won’t turn on

✔︎ Check the circuit breakers – A switch may have been accidentally turned off.
Try to reset the circuit breaker if it’s tripping frequently or seems burned.

Condenser (outdoor unit) won’t run

✔︎ Check to see if there is debris blocking the condenser (outdoor unit). Make sure this is addressed in your annual maintenance check.
If cleaning the condenser (outdoor unit) doesn’t solve the issue, the problem is probably electrical and needs to be inspected immediately.

Not blowing cold air

✔︎ Clean the air filters – Dirty or clogged filters will impede airflow. They need to be changed regularly.
✔︎ Check the vents – Make sure they are clean and not covered by furniture or plants.
✔︎ Inspect the outside unit – Ensure the area is free of debris like sticks, stones, leaves, and branches.
When your central air unit is not blowing cold air, it’s possible your unit’s refrigerant needs recharging. The refrigerant is a chemical inside the air conditioner unit that helps cool the air. Typically, this substance never needs recharging unless there is a leak causing the chemical level to decline.

Thermostat improperly set

✔︎ Check to see if your air conditioning unit is on the “fan only” setting.

Air conditioner unit is leaking

While this could be a water leak, it could also be a leaking refrigerant gas, which can be harmful and needs to be inspected immediately by a professional.

No power to the thermostat

✔︎ See if your thermostat has good working batteries and its setting.

AC unit making strange noises

If you notice new banging, buzzing, humming, or other abnormal noises coming from your central air conditioner, get it checked out immediately by a professional.

If none of these solutions help, it’s time to call in your Corpus Christi AC repair professionals at Precision Air.

What can I do to help my system run efficiently?

1. Clean your outdoor AC unit.
A dirty outdoor compressor struggles to cool your home and makes your energy bill skyrocket. Use a coil cleaner with your garden hose or pressure washer, or we can do it for you.

2. Vacuum your vents.
Central AC systems use intake and return vents. If your vents are blocked, your air conditioner will struggle to keep your place cool. Use a vacuum with a brush or a “Swiffer” type disposable cloth.

3. Get a smart thermostat.
Google Nest “learns what temperatures you like at different times of the day. After a few days of learning, your thermostat will prepare a schedule for you”. It has a phone app so you can adjust the temp from anywhere. It quickly pays for itself in energy savings. It looks cool. We love it. We keep them in stock and we install them.

4. Use blinds, curtains, or glass tint.
The sun gets pretty intense here in the coastal bend. If you let the heat in, your AC has to remove it. You will stay comfy, your AC gets a break, and you save money with a lower electric bill.

5. Join the Comfort Club and get regular ac tune-ups.
When when you join the comfort club, you get exclusive benefits, like free ac maintenance and cleanings, discounts on all air conditioning repairs, and priority ac service visits. Learn more about how regular maintenance can keep your ac running at peak performance.

How long does a central air conditioning unit last?

– Is your current air conditioner the right size for the job?
Often, builders and homeowners choose based on price, but an undersized HVAC works extra hard to keep your home cool. This shortens its life and drives up your electrical bill.

– Does your current air conditioner get seasonal tune-ups and filter changes?
If both answers are yes, it should last 12-15 years.

What should I do about my frozen AC?

There are two causes for ice on your air conditioner coils; low airflow or a low refrigerant charge.

Low airflow – Low air flow can be related to a very dirty air filter, a dirty blower wheel, or a bad blower motor. These things reduce the amount of air that flows across your coil, causing condensation that freezes instead of draining.

Low refrigerant charge – All AC systems need a proper refrigerant charge to operate efficiently. When new, air conditioners are charged with refrigerant. Since it doesn’t consume any during operation, you must have a leak or faulty installation.
When you see ice on your air conditioning coil, it is serious. Our certified tech can locate the cause of the frozen AC coil and repair it quickly.

What are some common air conditioner problems?

Electrical Issues

After years of heavy use, electrical components within your air conditioner begin to wear down and lose their effectiveness. When individual parts fail, other parts could malfunction in a chain reaction, which could ultimately impair the entire system. The most common causes of AC electrical problems are aging components, loose wires, or electrical surges.

Refrigerant Leaks

To cool your home, your air conditioner must also remove heat and moisture from the air. The old standard refrigerant for air conditioners, R-22 (Freon), has been banned by the EPA because it damages the Earth’s ozone layer. If your system runs on R-22 that needs to be refilled or replaced, contact us to discuss an appropriate solution.

Water Drainage Issue

Water extracted from the air condenser must be drained using a thin drainage tube that extends to your home’s drainage pipe. The water drainage pipe should be inspected and cleaned regularly. We can install an automatic safety switch that brings your system to a halt the moment any AC water drainage backups are detected. If you already have a safety switch in your system, water backup could trigger the safety switch.
