To DIY or not to DIY?

Should you attempt furnace repair yourself? Keep in mind that since these systems require a significant amount of energy to run, attempting repairs on your own can jeopardize your safety and that of your family. Working on your system could probably void the warranty by doing the heating repairs yourself. However, when your furnace system isn’t working as it should, there are a few simple steps to do by yourself to troubleshoot the problem.

Furnace won’t turn on

DO:  Check that your pilot light is on or that you aren’t experiencing an electrical issue. If neither of those is the issue, then call in your Corpus Christi furnace repair experts.

Not blowing hot air

DO:  Check the air filters – Dirty or clogged filters will impede airflow. Air filters require frequent changing out.
DO: Check the vents – Make sure they are clean and not covered by furniture or plants.
DO: Vacuum around the furnace and its burner compartment to prevent dust buildup. You should allow for at least 2 feet of clearance around your furnace.

Bad smells coming from furnace

DON’T:  If you have a gas furnace and smell rotten eggs, then you have a gas leak and should leave the premises immediately.

Pilot light burning yellow

DON’T: The furnace’s pilot should always burn blue. If you ever notice it burning yellow, this is a sign that it’s producing too much carbon monoxide, an extremely dangerous gas. Turn it off immediately and call us right away to fix the problem.

Thermostat improperly set

DO: Make sure your temperature is set correctly and to the “heat” setting

No power to the thermostat

DO: Check if your thermostat has good working batteries and its setting.

Furnace making strange noises

DON’T:  All furnaces make a little bit of noise, but if it’s loud and you can hear it from the next room, then something is up and your unit needs an inspection.

If none of these solutions help, it’s time to call in your Corpus Christi heater repair professionals at Precision Air.

What can I do to help my system run efficiently?

1. Keep the area around your furnace clean
We recommend a 2-foot clearance around your furnace. Move any furniture or boxes and vacuum regularly to keep it free from dust.

2. Vacuum your vents.
Central HVAC systems use intake and return vents. If your vents are blocked, your furnace will struggle to keep your home warm.

3. Get a smart thermostat.
Google Nest learns what temperatures you like at different times of the day. After a few days of learning, your thermostat will prepare a schedule for you. It has a phone app so you can adjust the temp from anywhere. It quickly pays for itself in energy savings. It looks cool. We love it. We keep them in stock and we install them.

4. Join the Comfort Club and get regular heater maintenance.
When when you join the comfort club, you get exclusive benefits, like free furnace maintenance and cleanings, discounts on all furnace repairs, and priority furnace service visits. Learn more about how regular maintenance can keep your heater running at peak performance.

How long does a furnace last?

A well-maintained furnace can last at least 15 to 20 years, but completing annual maintenance and being diligent with repairs can extend its life even longer.
